"It's a hand holding service," he explains. "For us, this might be our thousandth wedding. For the couple, it's their first."

That experience extends far beyond music itself. Language barriers, transporting equipment across difficult terrain, understanding local suppliers and navigating historic venues all become part of the job.

One recent celebration required musical equipment to be transported into Mont Saint-Michel using an ancient pulley system, because there was no other way to reach the venue. For Alex, those logistical challenges are simply another opportunity to make the impossible feel effortless to the couple, even if the work behind it is anything but.

"The couple shouldn't have to think about any of that," he says. "Our job is to solve the problems before they ever become theirs."

Ask Alex what couples should choose for their wedding music, and he won't begin by talking about genres or chart toppers. Instead, he'll ask them about their story.

"The best brief we can receive isn't a genre, it's a story," he says. "Music with genuine meaning to the people in the room always wins."

"You can hear a song you haven't listened to in 10 years and instantly remember exactly where you were the first time you heard it."

"We can arrange almost anything for strings," Alex explains. "Whether it's a favourite techno track, an indie song or something completely unexpected, our music directors can turn it into something that feels beautiful and completely unique."

One particularly memorable wedding saw ALR Music transform Fred again..'s Pull Me Out of This ("Put Your Loving Arms Around Me") into an unforgettable recessional, performed by a gospel choir accompanied by live strings.

"It was completely personal to them," Alex says. "That's what made it so powerful."

Choosing Between a Live Band, DJ or Both

One of the questions Alex is asked most frequently is whether couples should choose a live band, a DJ or a combination of the two.

His advice is simple: once the venue and date are confirmed, secure your entertainment. Most couples book between 12 and 18 months before their wedding, although ALR Music regularly accommodates shorter lead times whenever possible. Waiting isn't always impossible, but the earlier conversations begin, the greater the creative possibilities become.

One Piece of Advice Every Bride Should Hear

If Alex could offer every couple one piece of advice, it would be this: "Tell us your story, not just the songs."

He believes there are 4 defining musical moments during every wedding: the processional, the recessional, the couple's entrance and the first dance. While ceremonies and drinks receptions can still feel beautiful with 1 or 2 musicians, creating an unforgettable evening requires performers who know how to read a room, build momentum and keep guests engaged. "A great band doesn't just play songs," Alex says. "They build the night."
