After the Big Day: What to Do With Your Wedding Pieces, and How to Keep Them Forever

What to do with your veil, bouquet and dress after the wedding, from our Wedding Editor's own experience.

The confetti has been swept up and the thank you cards are (nearly) written. But what about the veil on the back of the door, the bouquet wilting in a vase and the dress you can't quite bring yourself to box away? I share what I kept, what I wish I had, and the three Directory partners who can help you hold on to it all.

The pieces that stay with you

I married on 12th September. A few weeks on, the day still feels close enough to touch, and so do the pieces I carried through it.

The veil was the first thing I knew I wanted to keep. Before the wedding I had our date embroidered into it, a small detail most guests would never notice, but one that turns it into something to hand down rather than something to store. One day I'd love someone I love to wear it, with our date stitched into the tulle beside theirs.

Then there is the dress. I'm currently talking to Studio Phini about what could come next for my bridal looks, and I'll be sharing where that conversation leads.

The bouquet is a different story. I would have loved to have it preserved, and I didn't organise it in time. Flowers don't wait, and in the happy blur of the days after a wedding it is so easy to let that window close. If there is one thing I would tell every Bride reading this, it is to decide what you want to keep before the day, not after.

So, here is everything I have learnt, and the partners I'd trust with the pieces that matter most.

Your dress and bridal looks: Studio Phini

For wearing your dress again, in a completely new way

A wedding dress holds so much, and yet it's so often worn just once. Studio Phini reimagines the clothes you already own through dyeing, embroidery, repairs and full redesign, with bridal one of their specialisms. Their artisans are chosen for their craftsmanship and their years inside houses like Burberry and Alexander McQueen.

The possibilities are wider than you might think: shortening and restyling, dyeing your dress a colour you'll love, reworking it into separates, adding embroidery or personalisation, or transforming part of it into a keepsake such as a bag, a jacket or even a christening gown. One of their Brides, Grace, had her Vivienne Westwood wedding dress redesigned to wear to her maid of honour's wedding.

My favourite detail? Phini offer natural dyeing, and your wedding bouquet could even be used to dye your dress, so the day is woven into it forever.

How it works

  1. Book your appointment. In person at their London studio in Canonbury, virtually, or with a home visit. For bridal, Phini always recommend seeing your dress in person. Bring the piece and anything that inspires you, a colour, a cutting, a feeling. You don't need a finished idea; that's the part you find together.
  2. Receive your bespoke plan. A tailored design and quote covering the techniques, timeline and final vision. Design completion is typically 4 to 6 weeks.
  3. Crafted by hand. Your piece passes to their vetted artisans, who bring it to life entirely by hand, with photo updates as it progresses.
  4. The reveal. Collect it at a final fitting in the studio, or have it hand delivered or sent to you, fully insured and finished in their signature gift wrapping.

Good to know

  • Pricing: projects start from around £500. As a guide, alterations start at £300, clothes dyeing at £600, reconstructions at £600 and shoe dyeing at £250.
  • Appointments: £25 on weekdays and £35 at weekends in the studio. Virtual appointments are free.
  • There is no time limit. Whether it's been a month or many years, your dress is welcome whenever you're ready.
  • Don't dry clean first. Some cleaners use brightening or whitening treatments that affect how fabric takes colour. And don't worry about mud on the hem, Phini can use it for sample testing.
  • Shipping is included in your quote and your piece is insured both ways.

Madeeco

Your bouquet: Madeeco

For turning your flowers into an original piece of art

Founded by Nooriya, Madeeco London preserves wedding bouquets and reimagines them as framed artwork. Rather than recreating your bouquet exactly, each piece captures its essence, with blooms carefully pressed or kept three dimensional and arranged into a one of a kind composition.

How it works

  1. Book your commission. Madeeco only take a limited number of commissions each month, so early enquiries are encouraged. Once you enquire, you'll receive their information pack with frame styles and pricing, followed by a bespoke proposal and guidance on sending your flowers safely.
  2. Your flowers transform. Over several months, your bouquet moves through a careful process where preservation meets design.
  3. Your finished artwork. Once complete and framed, it is delivered safely to your home.

Good to know

  • Timing is everything. Send your bouquet as soon as possible after the wedding, using a tracked next day service. For a weekend wedding, posting on Monday morning for delivery by 9am Tuesday usually works best.
  • Frames: choose from Modern Minimalist (solid oak with a hand cut textile backing), Ivory Shadowbox, Woodland (oil stained oak, for pressed and 3D flowers) or a fully bespoke frame made to measure in London.
  • Turnaround: 16 to 24 weeks.
  • No dyes or paints. Colours naturally deepen and soften over time, and white blooms develop a warm, honeyed patina. For an all white bouquet, Madeeco suggest including a mix of textures and foliage.
  • Now taking 2027 bookings.

"I was thinking about floral preservation as previous brides I knew regretted not doing this... to any bride who is thinking about having your bouquet preserved, this is an absolute must." Angel, a Madeeco Bride

My advice: book Madeeco while you are still planning, alongside your florist. Let your florist know, and ask a bridesmaid or your planner to be in charge of getting the bouquet posted on Monday morning.

LIFE by Pippa Mackenzie

Your story: LIFE by Pippa Mackenzie

For the photographs, the speeches and everything in between

Your photographs will arrive in a gallery link, and too many of them never leave a screen. LIFE, created by photographer Pippa Mackenzie, turns them into a bespoke, handcrafted coffee table book, comparable in quality to publishers like Assouline and Taschen.

What makes it different is that it is more than a photo album. LIFE weaves your photographs together with your readings, speeches, vows, letters, sketches and other mementos into one beautifully designed story.

How it works

  1. A personal introduction. A private conversation with Pippa to understand your story and what matters most.
  2. Collecting your images and content. Pippa helps you gather your photographs, mementos and words.
  3. The LIFE Creation Session. In person or remote, Pippa goes through everything with you and helps curate the collection. If you're overwhelmed by thousands of photos, she can curate it for you.
  4. Design. Ian, their graphic designer, designs your first draft, and you proof it with as many rounds of changes as you need.
  5. Printing and binding by expert publishers, printers and artisan bookbinders.
  6. A legacy delivered, ready to enjoy with family and friends.

Good to know

  • Timeline: around six months from start to finish.
  • Extra copies can be ordered, a lovely gift for parents.

My advice: keep the paper. Your order of service, the speeches, your vows and the cards from the day all have a home in LIFE.

Your after the wedding checklist

Before the day

  • Decide which pieces you want to keep, redesign or preserve.
  • Book bouquet preservation with Madeeco and tell your florist.
  • Consider personalising your veil (a date, initials, a line from your vows) so it's ready to hand down.
  • Put one person in charge of collecting your bouquet, veil and dress at the end of the night.

The first week

  • Post your bouquet on Monday morning, tracked next day delivery.
  • Hang your dress, and don't dry clean or spot clean it if you're considering dyeing or redesign.
  • Collect your paper pieces: order of service, speeches, vows, cards.

The first few months

  • Book a Phini appointment to explore your dress (no rush, there's no time limit).
  • Once your gallery arrives, start your LIFE book with Pippa.
  • Store your veil folded in acid free tissue.
