Music has the remarkable ability to transport us. A single song can take you back to a first date, a summer holiday, or the exact moment you fell in love. Yet despite its emotional power, music isn't always the first element couples think deeply about when planning their wedding.
For Alex Le Roux, founder of ALR Music, that's a missed opportunity.
Over the past 14 years, Alex has grown what began as a single band into one of the world's leading luxury entertainment companies, performing everywhere from the rolling hills of Tuscany to private estates in America, the beaches of Italy and, most recently, the first wedding ever held at The Abbey of Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy, France.
But for Alex, exceptional wedding entertainment has never been about simply filling a dance floor. It's about storytelling, atmosphere and creating moments that could belong to no one else.
From One Band to a Global Business
At the time of launching ALR Music, Alex became Music Director at The Arts Club in Mayfair, taking over from Mark Ronson. His first move was to build the club a house band, and ALR's flagship 9 piece party band, The Soul Jets, was born. Performing twice a week, he noticed something happening. Guests weren't just returning to hear the music, they were asking if the band would perform at the biggest celebrations of their lives.
"People kept coming back," Alex explains. "Then they started asking, 'Can you come and play at our wedding?' That's when I realised we had something special."
What started as one exceptional live band has evolved into an international entertainment company producing weddings and events across Europe, America and Asia. While the scale has changed dramatically, the original ambition remains exactly the same: to bring genuine luxury to live music.
"It's always been about creating a luxury experience around incredible musicians."
Today, ALR's roster includes performers who have toured with some of the biggest names in the music industry, from Paul McCartney and Robbie Williams to RAYE, bringing world class talent to private celebrations around the globe.
Luxury Is About More Than Talent
While extraordinary musicians are naturally at the heart of ALR Music, Alex believes talent alone isn't enough.
"There are 3 things that define us," he says. "Talent, relationships and service."
It's a philosophy that runs through every wedding they produce. The musicians may perform on some of the world's biggest stages, but it's the experience surrounding them that truly elevates the day. Every event is approached with meticulous planning, clear communication and an unwavering commitment to professionalism, qualities that wedding planners return to time and time again. Alex compares the experience to buying from a luxury jeweller. "When you're investing in something at the top end of the market, you expect exceptional service. Music should be no different."
It's this level of care that has earned ALR Music long standing relationships with many of the industry's leading planners, who know the team will arrive early, adapt to changing schedules and fit smoothly into the wider production of the day.
Why Personalisation Matters More Than Ever
One of the biggest misconceptions Alex encounters is that choosing wedding music simply means selecting a playlist. In reality, that's only the beginning. "We don't just send a band for a couple of hours," he says. "We want to understand why a song matters."
Rather than asking couples what they want to hear first, Alex's team often starts by exploring the stories behind the music. Perhaps it's the song playing when they first met. Maybe it was on repeat during a road trip across Europe, or became the soundtrack to countless milestones throughout their relationship. Those details become the foundation for something entirely personal to them.
"The music should feel like your story. Not a generic wedding playlist."
If couples aren't sure where to begin, the conversation shifts away from songs altogether.
Instead, Alex asks about favourite artists, engagement playlists, the music that instantly reminds them of one another, and even the songs they'll never want to hear on their wedding day. "Most couples know how they want to feel," he says. "They might not know the exact song, but they know they want goosebumps, excitement or complete joy. From there, we can build something that's uniquely theirs."
It's a refreshingly collaborative process that often uncovers musical ideas couples would never have considered themselves.
Music Should Look as Good as It Sounds
When couples obsess over florals, stationery, tableware and lighting, Alex believes the musicians themselves shouldn't feel like an afterthought. "You can't spend months creating this beautiful aesthetic and then have the band arrive in standard black suits."
Instead, ALR Music carefully considers how every performer will look within the wider design of the wedding. Mood boards are created, colour palettes discussed and styling adjusted so the musicians complement the celebration rather than distract from it. "If everyone's wearing linen and you've designed this relaxed Mediterranean wedding, traditional black tie can feel completely out of place."
It's a subtle detail many couples never consider, yet one that contributes enormously to the overall atmosphere.
For Alex, live entertainment isn't simply something guests hear, it's part of what they see.
Creating Luxury Anywhere in the World
Although the UK remains ALR Music's largest market, destination weddings have become an increasingly significant part of the business. Italy is now their second largest destination, with dozens of celebrations taking place there each year, alongside regular events across Europe, America and Asia.
Despite the changing locations, Alex insists the client experience never changes. Whether the wedding takes place in a 5 star hotel or on a remote mountainside, the team's role is to remove stress long before the first note is played.
"It's a hand holding service," he explains. "For us, this might be our thousandth wedding. For the couple, it's their first."
That experience extends far beyond music itself. Language barriers, transporting equipment across difficult terrain, understanding local suppliers and navigating historic venues all become part of the job.
One recent celebration required musical equipment to be transported into Mont Saint-Michel using an ancient pulley system, because there was no other way to reach the venue. For Alex, those logistical challenges are simply another opportunity to make the impossible feel effortless to the couple, even if the work behind it is anything but.
"The couple shouldn't have to think about any of that," he says. "Our job is to solve the problems before they ever become theirs."
Why Meaning Matters More Than Musical Trends
Ask Alex what couples should choose for their wedding music, and he won't begin by talking about genres or chart toppers. Instead, he'll ask them about their story.
"The best brief we can receive isn't a genre, it's a story," he says. "Music with genuine meaning to the people in the room always wins."
For couples who feel overwhelmed by endless playlists and inspiration online, this comes as a welcome relief. Rather than expecting clients to know exactly what they want, Alex and his team guide them through a process of discovery, uncovering the songs, artists and memories that have shaped their relationship.
"What was playing on your first holiday together? What's on your engagement playlist? Which song reminds you instantly of your partner?" he asks. "Those answers tell us far more than simply asking what your favourite genre is."
Music, he believes, is one of the most personal parts of a wedding because it has the power to transport people back to a moment in time.
"You can hear a song you haven't listened to in 10 years and instantly remember exactly where you were the first time you heard it."
That emotional connection is what ALR Music builds every performance around. Rather than recreating the same soundtrack for every celebration, every arrangement is designed to feel as though it belongs exclusively to that couple.
The Biggest Music Trends Brides Are Choosing Right Now
While personalisation remains the strongest trend of all, Alex has noticed several styles becoming increasingly popular. "Soul, funk and classic R&B are as strong as ever," he says. "There's definitely a feeling of nostalgia. Couples love those throwback tracks that everyone knows and instantly wants to dance to."
Artists like Craig David, Ashanti and Nelly continue to make appearances throughout receptions, while timeless live performances remain favourites for filling dance floors.
At the same time, ceremony music has evolved far beyond traditional classical pieces. String quartets continue to grow in popularity, but today's couples are asking for something far more personal to them.
"We can arrange almost anything for strings," Alex explains. "Whether it's a favourite techno track, an indie song or something completely unexpected, our music directors can turn it into something that feels beautiful and completely unique."
It's this creativity that allows couples to surprise their guests while still staying true to their personalities.
One particularly memorable wedding saw ALR Music transform Fred again..'s Pull Me Out of This ("Put Your Loving Arms Around Me") into an unforgettable recessional, performed by a gospel choir accompanied by live strings.
"It was completely personal to them," Alex says. "That's what made it so powerful."
Choosing Between a Live Band, DJ or Both
One of the questions Alex is asked most frequently is whether couples should choose a live band, a DJ or a combination of the two.
His answer?
"It completely depends on the venue, the guest count, your budget and, most importantly, the atmosphere you want to create."
In an ideal world, every stage of the day would have its own soundtrack. A string quartet for the ceremony. A jazz band during cocktails. A live party band for the evening. A DJ to keep guests dancing long into the night. But Alex is equally realistic that not every wedding allows for that.
One of ALR Music's most popular options is Beat, a hybrid concept combining a DJ with live vocalists, percussion and saxophone. The result delivers the energy of a full live performance while requiring far less space than a traditional band. "It's compact," Alex says, "but it packs a massive punch."
The Questions Every Couple Should Ask
Music providers are often compared on playlists, pricing and performer numbers, but Alex believes couples should be asking something entirely different. "Who's actually looking after you on the day?"
At ALR Music, every wedding includes a dedicated representative responsible for managing the musicians, coordinating timings, overseeing sound and solving any problems before they reach the couple. "You shouldn't be worrying about whether the band has eaten or whether the sound check is running late."
It's a level of behind the scenes management that many couples don't realise they need until they're standing in the middle of their wedding day.
Alex also encourages couples to ask who is responsible for the audiovisual production and whether anyone has considered venue restrictions. Historic houses, listed buildings and private estates often have strict sound limits that can dramatically affect the evening's entertainment.
"It's much better to understand those limitations at the beginning than discover them on the day."
Why Entertainment Should Be Booked Earlier Than You Think
Like photographers, planners and venues, exceptional musicians book up surprisingly quickly. "There are only so many Saturdays during peak wedding season," Alex explains.
His advice is simple: once the venue and date are confirmed, secure your entertainment. Most couples book between 12 and 18 months before their wedding, although ALR Music regularly accommodates shorter lead times whenever possible. Waiting isn't always impossible, but the earlier conversations begin, the greater the creative possibilities become.
One Piece of Advice Every Bride Should Hear
If Alex could offer every couple one piece of advice, it would be this: "Tell us your story, not just the songs."
He believes there are 4 defining musical moments during every wedding: the processional, the recessional, the couple's entrance and the first dance. Each presents an opportunity to create something deeply personal, moments that guests remember long after the flowers have withered and the tables have been cleared.
"Those are the moments where your personality can really shine."
Where Should You Spend Your Budget?
When budgets become tight, entertainment can often feel like an easy place to compromise. Alex disagrees.
If there is one part of the day worth investing in, it's the dance floor. "The party is where professional musicians really make the difference."
While ceremonies and drinks receptions can still feel beautiful with 1 or 2 musicians, creating an unforgettable evening requires performers who know how to read a room, build momentum and keep guests engaged. "A great band doesn't just play songs," Alex says. "They build the night."
It's perhaps the simplest way to summarise ALR Music's philosophy. For Alex, music has never been background noise. It's the soundtrack to one of life's biggest moments.
When chosen with intention, performed by exceptional musicians and rooted in a couple's own story, it becomes something far more lasting than entertainment alone. It becomes the memory people carry home.
